A disease of diarthrodial joints (inflammation of diarthrodial joints knees, hips, and wrists) Oa occurs when there is an imbalance between synthesis and degradation of articular cartilage. Oa is the most common form of arthritis in synovial joints and surrounding tissues inflammatory, biochemical, and immunologic factors are involved as compensatory mechanisms. Involves the entire joint; articular cartilage, synovium, capsule, subchondral bone. Prevalence increase with age, with 65% of those over 80 affected. Prevalence varies with: gender (women > men), genetics, ethnicity (hip oa white > indian, asian, blacks) Clinical presentation: elderly age, age <45 more common in men, after that increased in women, hands, hips, knees, feet, neck and back most common. Symptoms: osteoarthritis usually asymmetrical joint pain, localized pain, deep aching character, worsens with activity, morning stiffness (lasts < 30 min, often related to weather (gloomy weather worsens the symptoms, limited joint motion/range of motion, limits daily activities.
