MATURE CONNECTIVE TISSUE: Bone Tissue
Bone Tissue
• Bones (organs) with 3 connective tissue:
o Bone (osseous) tissue, periosteum, endosteum
MATURE CONNECTIVE TISSUE: Liquid Connective Tissue
Liquid Connective Tissue
• Blood Tissue
o Connective tissue with liquid ECM (blood plasma)
• Lymph
Elements of Blood
• Red Blood Cells = erythrocytes
• Hematocrit: % (by volume) of formed elements in whole blood
o Biconcave disc:
▪ Increases surface area to volume ratio
▪ Forms rouleaux
▪ Increases flexibility
o No mitochondria/ER/ribosomes/nuclei - Largely cytoskeleton/cytoplasm -
Life span: 120 days
o RBC Cytoplasm: 2/3 water, 1/3 protein (95% is hemoglobin)
• White Blood Cells
o Have diff. shaped nuclei + staining properties
o Granulocytes: Neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils
o Agranulocytes: Lymphocytes, monocytes
• Platelets (thrombocytes)
• No nucleus
• Disklike, 2-4 um diameter, look like aggregates in blood smear
Granulocytes:
1. Neutrophils:
• 50-70% of WBC – polymorphonuclear leukocytes
• Lysosomal enzymes, bactericidal compounds
• Active phagocytes
• Breakdown releases chemotaxic signals
• 1 nucleus with variable # of lobes
