Matter is made up of very tiny units called atoms. Atom is basic building block of matter. The number of different atoms currently known is: a chemical element consists of single type of atom and a chemical compound consists of two or more different kinds of atoms. Each different type of atom is the building block of different chemical element. Element is substance composed of single type of atom. It cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reactions. The international union of pure and applied chemistry (iupac) recognizes 112 elements and all matter is made up of these types. About 90 of the elements can be obtained from natural sources. The remainder do not occur naturally and have been created only in laboratories. The periodic table is chemist"s directory of elements. A compound is a substance made up of two or more elements.
