File system: the logical view that a system provides for users to organize and manage their files. Text file: a file in which bytes of data are organized as characters. But all information on a computer is stored as binary digits. Binary file: a file that contains data in a specific format. 8 or 16 bits refer to a character or a special format. File type: contain a specific type of information, such as a program, a picture, or audio. Most operating systems recognize a list of specific file types. File protection: limiting who can access the files. Unix operating protection system: i) owner (yes read, yes write/delete) ii) group (yes read, no write/delete) iii) world (no to everything) Warning: file extension is only helper, does not mean its organized the right way. Atomic operations: delete, open, close, rename & copy. Processing data: read data , write data, append data & truncate.
