HIST 3791 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5.5: Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, Chlamydia Trachomatis, Human Microbiota
Document Summary
Classification of bacteria: aerobic bacteria-absolute requirement for oxygen. Obligate anaerobes-grow only in complete or nearly complete absence of oxygen. Killed by oxygen-we find obligate anaerobes in or gi tract because it has very little oxygen. Facultative anaerobes: can grow without oxygen, but can use oxygen if it"s available. Notes on gram staining in the notes from class. Importance of gram stain: used to divide all bacteria into two classes, provides direction for further microbiological testing. Classes of bacteria that can"t be stained very well: rickettsia-obligate intracellular parasitic bacteria. It is a small coccobacilli, difficult to culture. Rickettsia rickettsia transmitted the rocky mountain spotted fever, rickettsia. Chlamydia trachomatis is ocular trachoma and infects the ocular tract. They are not visible by gram staining, and are osmotically fragile. They are the smallest organisms capable of self-replication, and are associated with community-acquired pneumonia. It is also associated with postpartum endometritis (m. huminis)
