Chapter 6: the origin and evolution of life on earth. Stromatolites: stromatolites ( rock beds ) are distinctively layered rocks, modern living stromatolites resemble mats of living microbes interweaved with sediments, living mats of microorganisms that deposit material that builds up layers and layers of material. We find their evidence for their existence 3 and a half billion years ago. The most living stromatolites are always at the top. You build up the stromatolite rock: uppermost microbes use photosynthesis to generate energy. Microfossils: not surprisingly, confirming the existence of an ancient microfossil given all of the erosion with time is difficult, indeed controversial, as we look at the geological record it is more abundant in the more recent years. It is more and more scare in years further back. The long chain molecules have dissipated over time: strong, almost irrefutable evidence of microfossils dating ~3. 0 billion years ago, less concrete evidence suggests that microfossils date ~3. 5 billion years ago.
