Document Summary
Prejudice: unjusti able and usually negative attitude toward a group. Prejudice is a three-part mixture of beliefs (stereotypes), emotions (fear), and a predisposition to action (to discriminate). Stereotype: a generalized (sometimes accurate but still overgeneralized) belief about a group of people (young men drive faster than older women) Discrimination: unjusti able negative behaviour toward a group. (reject obese job candidates) Explicit (overt) prejudice of our awareness (active hate toward a race) & implicit (automatic) prejudice (unconsciously doesn"t sit next to person of different race on bus) Implicit racial associations: (implicit association tests white people took longer to associate peace with black names than with white names. Unconscious patronization: white teachers mark white student essays with harsh comments & low grades, but not with black students as they have lower expectations of the black students. Race-in uenced perceptions: if someone is black or white it will determine what you perceive he will pull out of his pocket (gun or wallet)
