Document Summary

Hulls" concept of drive was to seek to maintain homeostasis, a state of physiological equilibrium or stability. Drive theories apply concept of homeostasis to behaviour. A drive is an internal state of tension that motivates an organism to engage in activates that should reduce this tension. Unpleasant states of tension are viewed as disruptions of the preferred equilibrium. Motivated to pursue actions that will lead to drive reduction. Ex. hunger (drive) without food for a while you begin to feel discomfort this internal tension motives one to obtain food and restore physiological state back to equilibrium. Homeostasis irrelevant in some ways thirst for knowledge . Ex. sees an ice cream store and buys and ice cream even though not hungry. Drive theory assumes ppl are motivated to relieve tension and restore equilibrium but in this case there is no tension to relive that would cause motivation.
