Some of us use nonprescription drugs in moderation and w/o disrupting our lives. Some of us develop self-harming substance related disorders, using psychoactive drugs. Psychoactive drug: chemical substance that alters perceptions + moods. Drugs overall effect depends on biological effects but also psychology of user"s expectations, vary in social contexts + cultures. Tolerance: diminishing effect with regular use of the same dose of a drug, requiring the user to take larger + large doses before experiencing the drug"s effect. With continued use of alcohol/some other drugs, user"s brain chemistry adapts to offset the drug effect (called neuroadaptation) Ever increasing doses can threat health, may lead to addiction. Addiction: compulsive drug craving + use, despite adverse consequences. Withdrawal: discomfort + distress that follow discontinuing the use of an addictive drug. Physical dependence: physiological need for a drug, marked by unpleasant withdrawal symptoms when the drug is discontinued. Psychological dependence: psychological need to use a drug, such as to relieve negative emotions.
