Chapter 8 experimental design 2: factorial desgisn. Factorial design: any experimental design with more than 1 independent variable. Factorial matrix: a row + column arrangement that characterizes a factorial design + shows the independent variables, the levels of each independent variable + the total number of conditions in the study. Main effect: the presence or otherwise of statistically significant differences between the levels of an independent variable in a factorial design. Interactions: in a factorial design, occurs when the effect of one independent variable depends on the level of another independent variable. Making graphs for factorials: make independent variable in columns for x-axis, put means for top row on graph, put means from bottom row on graph, create legend that identifies second i. v. Mixed factorial design: a factorial design with at least 1 between subjects factor + at least 1 within=subjects factor. P x e factorial design: a factorial design with at least one subject factor and one manipulated factor.
