Psychoanalysis- refers to psychoanalytically oriented psychotherapy (the change process) guided by psychoanalytic theory. Includes a theory of personality, an approach to studying personality and procedures for assessing/ changing personality. Theories will emphasize primacy of driving forces within the person that motivate them to show consistent patterns of behaviour and interpersonal relations. Most psychoanalytic theorists say that motivating forces derive from processes that occur beyond the conscious awareness of the individual. Psychoanalytic theory = freud; founder of psychoanalytic thought and first modern personality psychologist. His theory made of a number of separable/ interrelated mini theories. He proposed an organizational framework of mind, describing different mental structures (id, ego, superego) and their relationships to one another. Described 3 levels of consciousness: unconscious, preconscious, conscious.
