International statistical classification of disease and related health problems (icd) used in other countries, similar to dsm, but used also for medical illnesses. 45 years: thought to be some other phenotype of psychotic disorder. Substance-related disorders: most adults who abuse or are dependent on alcohol or illicit drugs are in their late teens and early 20s, older adults are more vulnerable to the effects of alcohol because they metabolize it more slowly. It also exacerbates already existing health problems and can potentially interact with medications: risk of alcohol abuse range from cirrhosis of the liver (terminal condition) to heightened rate of injury through hip fractures and motor vehicle accidents. Increased risk of diabetes, high bp, congestive heart failure, osteoporosis, and mood disorders: long-term alcohol use may lead to changes in the frontal lobes and cerebellum (increasing age-related deficits, dementia can develop in severe and prolonged alcohol abuse.
