Document Summary

Individual vowels can be identified with individual syllables. Vowels are usually produced with the vibrating of the vocal folds but not always. Three aspects of vowel production: 1. Monophthong a pure vowel or a vowel having a single, unchanging sound quality. Tongue dimensions can be high-low or front-back (tongue advancement) Tense and lax refer to tenseness or length. Tenseness refers to the degree of muscle activity. Rounded vowels are produced with the lips in a pursed and protruded state. Unrounded vowels are formed without such pursing or protrusion. In front series the tongue is near the front of the mouth and the lips are in an unrounded state. The central vowels are produced with a tongue body position roughly in the center of the mouth. The back series tend to be rounded. Diphthongs are vowel-like sounds produced with a gradually changing articulation. Two symbols are required one to represent the onglide and another to represent the offglide.
