Linguists- specialists that try to determine ways in which we use language to communicate. The average adult speaker produces about 150 words per minute selecting each from bet(cid:449)een 30,000 and 60,000 alternati(cid:448)es stored in the user"s brain. Nonspeech means may carry up to 60% of the information exchanged: language. A socially shared code or conventional system for representing concepts through the use of arbitrary symbols and rule-governed combinations of those symbols. Languages contain dialects subcategories of the parent language that use similar but not identical rules. The death of languages is not rare. English is a germanic variation of a much larger family of indo-european languages as varied as italian, greek, russian, hindi, urdu, persian, and. English has the largest number of words 700,000. English adds an estimated half dozen words per day. Evolves with historical, social, and cultural contexts. Described by at least five parameters: phonologic, morphologic, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic.
