Document Summary

Horticulture and food storage were important for most groups. Hunting and gathering also relatively important among some groups. Most groups used pottery with incised designs. Groups that emphasized horticulture were relatively sedentary, but groups placing more emphasis on hunting/gathering were more mobile. Social organization was diverse, although lineage-clan organization was widespread. Confederacies of neighboring tribes existed among some groups, particularly among iroquoian speakers. Warfare was prevalent, and many villages were surrounded by palisades. A number of northeastern groups did not survive into the 20th century, and some groups fled to the west and/or were forced to relocate to indian. A number of small reservations exist today, and some tribes are currently actively reorganizing and seeking federal recognition. The mashantucket pequot tribe in eastern connecticut operates one of the largest casinos in the world. In 1987, the ojibwa (chippewa) were granted the right to hunt and gather any resources within their traditional territory without regard to state regulations.
