Document Summary

Genetics: the study of inheritance or heredity that explores: The transmission of biological properties (traits) from parents to offspring. The expression and variation of those traits. The structure and function of genetic material. You can study 4 different levels of genetics: organism level, cell level, chromosome level, molecular level. Genome: the sum total of genetic material of an organism. Some may appear in non chromosomal sites: plasmids: tiny extra pieces of dna (outside of chromosome, organelles: mitochondria and chloroplasts. Classical genetics: a functional unit of heredity. Molecular and biochemical genetics: site on the chromosome that provides information for a certain cell function. Preferred definition: a segment of dna that contains the necessary code to make a protein or an rna. Translation: basic unit of dna is a nucleotide: Nitrogenous base (makes specifically a, t, g or c) Adenine (a) always pairs with thymine (t) make 2 bonds. Guanine (g) always pairs with cytosine (c) make 3 bonds.
