Chapter one : launching your study of communication theory. What is a theory: a theory is an umbrella term for all careful, systematic, and self-conscious discussion and analysis of communication phenomena, or set of systematic hunches about the way things operate. ( judee burgoon) Three key features of burgoon"s notion: set of hunches. By referring to several hunches it is made clear that a theory is several ideas. Before creating a hunch there is research that needs to be done. It can"t just be a completely made up idea: systematic hunches. There has to be a shown connection between the ideas in the theory. What is communication: there is no single definition, 5 features of communication, messages. Talking & listening , reading& writing: creation of messages. Constructed, invented, planned, crafted, constituted, selected , or adopted by communicator. Communicator makes a choice of how they deliver the message.
