Accompanied with suicidal thoughts & self-destructive tendencies. 25% of women, 15% of men have depression. Causing harm to yourself, but maybe not to others. Can be biologically traded or by stressful life situations. Loss of a loved one, break up, social exclusion, failure at a major life goal. 70% of people who commit suicide are depressed. Depression symptoms may disappear in 4-6 weeks. Manic: 4-6 weeks of depression, then 4-6 weeks of extreme happiness. Doesn"t always have to happen in weeks, can occur in days, months, etc. Drugs are effective because they raise serotonin levels. Electroshock therapies now only happen when drugs don"t work. Distractability, dif culty solving complex tasks, low self-esteem, bad nutrition decisions, feeling down all day. 6% of the population suffers from this. Symptoms carry around much longer, but are a little less severe than depression. Irrational fear causes the person to avoid object, activity, or situations. Become obsessed & senseless or offensive thoughts don"t go away.
