16 views3 pages

Document Summary

Chapter 18. 2 | heart valves make blood flow in one. Blood flows through the heart in one direction: atria ventricles great arteries. Open and close in response to difference in blood pressure. One atrioventricular (av) valve each is located at atrial-ventricular junction. Right av valve aka tricuspid valve // 3 flexible cusps. Left av valve aka mitral valve // bicuspid valve resembles a bishop"s miter hat. Chordae tendineae // small white collagen cords attached to each av valve flap. Anchor cusps to papillary muscles protruding from the ventricular walls. When heart relaxed, av valve flaps hang limp in ventricular chambers. Blood flows into atria then flows through open av valves into ventricles. When ventricles contract, pushes blood into chambers, pressure inside of ventricles increases, forces blood to push against valve flaps. Chordae tendineae and papillary muscles secret the flaps in closed position.
