Blood vessels often compared to a system of pipes, however unlike rigid pipes or hoses, vessels are dynamic tubes that constrict, relax, multiply, and pulsate. Heart contracts blood leaves ventricles and funnels into large arteries smaller arteries reaches smallest artery branches, arterioles, feeding into capillary beds of tissues and organs. Blood exits capillaries into venules , the smallest veins larger veins empty back into heart. Arteries // blood vessels carrying oxygen-rich blood away from the heart. Branch into smaller and smaller divisions as they leave. Veins // blood vessels that carry oxygen-low blood back toward the heart. Converge into successively larger vessels approaching the heart. In pulmonary circulation , arteries carry oxygen-poor blood to the lungs, and the veins carry oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the heart.
