Meltzer- the seventy-year itch controversies over human antiquity and their. 1860s researchers wanted to show that the new world was as old as pleistocene. Abbot found stone tools near the delaware river which he thought must be. European (bc ofc they were unlike what na were using). The tools were rude and allegedly were similar to the tools found in europe. Holmes in the 1890s argued that just bc they were rude didn"t mean they were old they may just be unfinished. This questioned the authenticity of the tools as paleolithic. Then, human remains were also found in these deposits in the early 1900s. Hrdlicka also was suspicious of their supposed age because if the skeletons were truly those of primitive human beings, their features should be different. In august, 1908 heavy rainfall in johnson mesa in northeastern new mexico exposed an extinct bison skeleton which were taken to harold cook, a paleontologist at the colorado museum of natural history.
