In this work weber began to question marxism. Ask why in western civilization(occident) cultural phenomena has appeared there but nowhere else, but has universal significance/ value . ex: Science in the west has empirical knowledge. It has existed elsewhere such as india, but they were lacking in observation/method of experiment. Representations of these are found in other societies besides europe, but they did not develop in the same manner. Capitalism- fateful force in modern europe, not based off the idea of impulse to gain the greatest amount of money. This impulse has been common to all sorts of men at all times and in all countries. Capitalism instead could be related to the restraint of that impulse, but also identical w/the pursuit of profit, by means of continuous, rational, capitalistic enterprise. Capitalistic economic action: expectation of profit by the utilization of opportunities for exchange, on peaceful chances of profit. (rational pursuit)
