Lesion: the general term used to denote an injury to, or other abnormality in, the body. Among the causes of brain lesions are stroke, tumor, physical trauma, + brain diseases. Stroke: occurs when a disturbance in blood ow to the brain produces a loss of function. Prolonged disturbance (e. g. a few minutes) permanent cell death + loss of function. The 2 immediate causes of stroke are blockage of blood ow and hemorrhage. Blockage: particulate matter (blood clot or plaque) is lodged in a blood vessel. Hemorrhage: a blood vessel breaks and leaks blood into the surrounding tissue. Aneurysm: the vessel"s structural weakness bulges out from the pressure of the blood; results in a hemorrhagic stroke when ruptured. Brain tumor: an anomalous, abnormal proliferation of cells in the brain.
