Motives are wants, needs, interests, and even desires that push people to do something in a given situation. This very goal directed behavior is known as motivation. There are three main types of theories on motivation: drive theories, incentive theories, and evolutionary theories. Drive theories, first described by hull, are based on the idea that homeostasis or equilibrium is desired at all times. A drive is an internal state for an organism, typically one that causes tension, that pushes the organism to engage in some action in order to lessen the tension being caused. Many times this is not a conscious decision. Think about the body trying to maintain homeostasis in temperature. If someone gets too cold they shiver to warm up, or if too hot, sweat to cool down.
