Textbook notes- chapter 6: social control and deviance. The goal of this chapter is to examine how society coheres and why some people transgress the boundaries of normality. Social deviance: any transgression of socially established norms. Crime: the violation of laws enacted by society. A functionalist approach explains the existence of social phenomena by the functions they perform. Social cohesion: social bonds explained by emil durkheim; how well people relate to each other and get along on a day-to-day basis. Durkheim"s thesis that there are two basic ways society can hold together: Mechanical or segmental solidarity: social cohesion based on sameness. Organic solidarity: social cohesion based on difference and interdependence of the parts. Durkheim concludes that social realignment is achieved dependent on the type of solidarity holding that particular society. Punishments may also serve to be restitutive that is, they attempt to restore the status quo that existed prior to an offense or event.
