Marketing trumps justice and local challengers face long odds. Fight for attention, confront indifference, face opponents w/ top pr machines. More democratic and participatory groups less likely to gain western ngo support than group led by strong, charismatic leader. Myth of equitable and beneficent global society apathy and self-satisfaction among industrialized nations neglect of worthy causes around the world. 2001: 126 high-intensity conflicts, 78 low-intensity conflicts, and 178 violent political conflicts.
