Development based on manipulation of and interaction with surrounding environment. 4 distinct stages with emergence of new abilities and ways of processing information. Schemes: patterns of behavior and thinking to deal with objects in world, innate tendency to interact with environment. Use schemes such as banging to understand what object is/ does. Adaptation: process of understanding new object using existing schemes. Accommodation: when new object doesn"t fit into existing scheme, child modifies existing scheme with new info or experience.
