Learners with exceptionalities= used to describe individuals whose physical, mental, or behavioral performance is so different from the norm (either high or low) that additional services are required to meet need. Students with sensory or physical disabilities that restrict ability to participate in general edu w/out assistance. Intellectual disabilities, emotional or behavioral disorders, learning abilities make difficult to learn in general edu without help. Outstanding talents that teachers find difficult to meet unique needs without help. Avoid using labels bc stigmatize, dehumanize and socially segregates students from peers. Disability= functional limitation person has that interferes with physical or cognitive abilities. Handicap= condition imposed on person with disabilities by society, physical environment or person"s attitude. Use language that puts the person before the disability bc disabilities do not define who they are. 12. 9% (bout every 1 in 8) students from ages 3-21 have a learning disability. Intellectual disability- significant limitations both intellectual functioning and adaptive behavior.
