Paying attention: carefully selecting only one, or very few, mental tasks on which to concentrate your limited attentional resources. You"ve got to be awake to process information. Reflexive attention/orienting response: the reflexive redirection of attention that orients you toward an unexpected stimulus. Involves the where pathway, to find the location of the unexpected stimulus. The mental attention-focusing mechanism that prepares you to encode stimulus information.
