BIOL 084 Chapter Notes - Chapter 14: Ectotherm, Lysosome, Hydrostatic Skeleton
Document Summary
Exoskeleton: made of chitin; shed periodically as it does not grow with the animal. Hydrostatic skeleton: closed body compartment filled with fluid; muscles change the shape of the compartment enabling animal to move from place to place. Endoskeleton: made of bone and cartilage that grows as the animal grows. Connected through ligaments, while tendons connect bone to muscles. Most life exists only within a fairly narrow range. Cold-blooded and warm blooded are no scientific names. Endotherm (homeotherm): maintaining a constant body temperature despite fluctuations in the environmental temperature: warm-blooded. Excretion removal of metabolic wastes such as water, carbon dioxide, and nitrogenous waste (3 types) Very soluble in water and highly toxic. Excreted mainly by organisms that live in the water. Excreted by earthworms and humans formed in the liver from ammonia. Pastelike substance; not soluble in water, not toxic. Excreted by insects, reptiles, and birds with minimum water loss. Cnidocytes: unique cells which contain stingers (nematocysts)
