Climate change= change in the statistics of the weather over a period of several decades. Analyze temperature anomalies rather than analyze temp. directly. Temp anomalies= difference between the temp and the reference temperature. Child growing; determine growth based on spot on wall. Because by averaging over the globe, we rid ourselves of most of the weather variability and more clearly isolate the smaller climate signal: weather variability completely independent of climate change. = particular regions can experience climate extremes (heat wave) that are. The warming has not been uniform, but occurred in 2 distinct periods: 1910-1945 & 1976-2002: the 3 warmest years on record = 2005, 2010, 2014. Yr to yr variations of temp in global avg temp are very small- a few tenths of a degree. Uncertainty in data remains due to uncertainties in adjustments (type of thermos used, change station locations, new environments, etc. : error bars- the scientist"s estimate of the potential error in their estimate.
