We use the term attention to describe a wide range of phenomena, from the basic. Alertness is associated with the neurotransmitter norepinephrine, and with activity. Orienting is associated with the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and with activity in the tectum (in the midbrain), the superior parietal lobe, and the temporal parietal junction.
