Document Summary
Overview: the social self is based upon knowledge of our social environments. Introspection can help in understanding our social self but may not always be accurate because self-knowledge is subject to construal processes, introspection is limited, and we can be biased by motives. We store self-knowledge and independent/interdependent are key in development of the social self, but the social self is also adaptable and shifts to match social situations and contexts. People have two factors of self- esteem trait (stable) and state (changes with context). Self-esteem is determined by contingent self-worth and domains of relevance. Self-evaluation impacted by the motives of self- enhancement and self-verification, as well as reflection and comparison. People prefer stable self- beliefs in order to maintain coherence. The discrepancy between the actual self and ought/ideal selves can lead to emotional dissatisfaction. People regulate their behavior in order to decrease this discrepancy and achieve goals. However, such automatic regulation can lead to ego depletion.
