We store self-knowledge and independent/interdependent are key in development of the social self, but the social self is also adaptable and shifts to match social situations and contexts. People have two factors of self- esteem trait (stable) and state (changes with context). Self-esteem is determined by contingent self-worth and domains of relevance. Self-evaluation impacted by the motives of self- enhancement and self-verification, as well as reflection and comparison. People prefer stable self- beliefs in order to maintain coherence. However, such automatic regulation can lead to ego depletion.
