Document Summary

10 case control studies and other study designs. Randomized clinical trials (rcts): randomization of a population according to specific characteristics and tested upon by some experimental variable: population is divided between the intervention group and a control group. Both study designs can test whether the exposure is associated with the disease. Case control studies: exa(cid:373)i(cid:374)i(cid:374)g a diseased populatio(cid:374)"s history and comparing it to a control group (non-diseased) to see what exposure led to the contraction of the disease. Two groups: cases: diseased individuals, controls: non-diseased. Case-control studies are designed to examine what proportion of cases & controls were exposed and what proportion was not: thus, it is a study of incidence. Measuring past exposure can be done through: questionnaires, review of past medical records, blood testing. Case-control studies are a comparison of a diseased population (rather than an exposed population) and is compared to a non-diseased population (rather than a non-exposed population).
