Improvements in manufacturing, transportation and the availability of credit increased the opportunity for colonists to purchase consumer goods. Consumer revolution : ability of a person to buy consumer goods became a sign of their respectability. The lack of standardized money hampered the trade between colonies. Massachusetts was the first place to issue paper bills to be used as money in 1690. Board of trade restricted the uses of paper bills in the currency acts of 1751 and 1763. Colonists used metal coins, barter and the extension of credit. American became more likely to be in debt because of the advertisements and consistent availability of credit. Parliament imposed taxes on sugar, paper, lead, glass and tea. Growth of colonial cities: placement of government, civic and education.
