HIST 172 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Connecticut Compromise, Benjamin Lincoln, Tax Collector
Document Summary
A grand federal procession was carried out by philadelphians on july 4, 1788 in honor of the new national constitution. They hoped to create a diverse but cohesive, prosperous nation. However, the new nation was never cohesive. The united states had faced the threat of collapse. Farmers in western massachusetts had a heavy burden of debt after the revolution ended. The farmers asked for protection, but the state supported the creditors instead. Farmers took up arms because their creditors threatened to foreclose on their property. The armed men shaysites, which led by daniel shays formed blockades to keep judges from issuing foreclosure orders. In january 1787, benjamin lincoln led the state force and arrested thousands shaysites, and reopened the courts. Thomas jefferson thought a little rebellion helped keep the country free, while others complained that the states could not maintain control. Liberty, madison warned, may be endangered by the abuses of liberty as well as the abuses of power.
