A negative gage pressure is called a suction. Below is a representation of gage and absolute pressure. Units are very important when used to describe pressure. The measurement of atmospheric pressure is usually used with a mercury barometer, which is a closed glass tube at one end with an open end that is immersed in a container of mercury. The tube, with its open end up, is filled with mercury then turned upside down. The column of mercury will come to an equilibrium position due to atmospheric pressure. Manometers use vertical or inclined liquid columns to measure pressure. Manometers are often used to measure the difference in pressure between two points. Simplest type of manometers (shown to the right) It has (cid:373)a(cid:374)y disadva(cid:374)tages like it"s o(cid:374)ly suitable if the pressure in the container is greater than atmospheric pressure. Also, the fluid in the container in which the pressure is to be measured must be liquid instead of gas.
