Hip hop derived from the african american oral tradition of storytelling and boasting. Many of the first hip hop innovators were of caribbean and jamaican decent. A toast is when a dj compliments the crowd. These innovators were in very poor neighborhoods so they had mobile. The first rappers were caked mcs or master of ceremony. Mcs hyped up the crowd and delivered information about upcoming social events. Rapping referred to the art of delivering skillful verbal rhetoric to impress the listener. Blaxploitation films are a genre that pictured stereotypical black urban life. Rap live shows were the most common during this time period. They were held in community centers parks etc. People would also se(cid:272)retly tape sho(cid:449)s a(cid:374)d sell the(cid:373) a(cid:374)d that"s ho(cid:449) (cid:449)ord got out a(cid:271)out (cid:272)ertai(cid:374) artists. Word of mouth was the biggest promotion during this time. Djs were the focal point of hip hop during this time as they provided the backdrop for the artists.
