Document Summary
Sista outsider: queer women of color and hip hop by eric darnell pritchard and maria l bibs. The majority of the academic and media attention ignores the work of lesbian and bisexual women of color. Hip hop critics continually malign hip hop because of its misogynistic and homophobic vitriol that the male rappers spew because they lack real creativity and are ofte(cid:374)ti(cid:373)es i(cid:374)se(cid:272)ure a(cid:271)out their o(cid:449)(cid:374) (cid:373)as(cid:272)uli(cid:374)it(cid:455). Due to hip hop"s (cid:272)o(cid:373)(cid:373)odifi(cid:272)atio(cid:374), hip hop fans somehow find ways to justify these misogynistic and homophobic lyrics. While true that some mainstream rap deserves criticism for its social intolerance, hip hop has always had a lesbian and bisexual presence but it has been ignored by the mainstream media. These artists do not fit the mold for women in hip hop so they have been cast aside. With the advent of social media, queer women of color have begun to establish a much larger presence in the underground hip hop community.
