HIST 3020 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9-10: Hiranyagarbha, Patanjali, Shesha
Document Summary
Yoga tradition part 3 chapter 9-10: classical yoga. The yoga of patanjali represents the climax of yogic traditions. His school is the paragon of modern yoga. Since it is estimated he lived in the 2nd century ce, it is assumed that patanjali was heavily influenced by buddhism. Hindus believe he was a reincarnation of ananta or. Shesha, the thousand-headed ruler of the serpe(cid:374)t race (cid:449)ho guarded the earth"s hidde(cid:374) treasures. Hindus believed ananta wanted to teach yoga on earth and fell from the heavens in the form of patanjali to do so. Western yoga enthusiasts regard patanjali as the father of yoga. However, the real originator of yoga was a man named hiranyagarbha (golden gem). Hiranyagarbha means that he is more of a cosmic force than just a man, a symbol for power. He composed two works on yoga: nirodha- yoga (yoga of restriction) and karma-yoga (yoga of action).
