SPEC 1714 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5-6: Narration, Simile, Institute For Operations Research And The Management Sciences
Document Summary
Chapter five titled, prose: style, types, nonfiction," is split into two parts. Style describes the manner of writing or speaking and plays a large role in interpreting the prose. A piece of work"s organization is the first thing you should look at when examining it. Paragraphs each contain a separate major thought unit, suggesting relationships and importance. Varying sentence lengths and structures are also to be considered. Longer sentences are best spoken with attention to pitch and vocal quality. Sentences that are kept balanced in terms of value point out connections or contrasts. These types of sentences have what is called parallelism. Even though they may be unequal in length, they are equal in value. Longer sentences may have a fulcrum which is the point where the parts balance. Punctuation is important for interpreting written texts more than in oral performances.
