NURS 84 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Corpus Luteum, Fallopian Tube, Endometrium
Document Summary
Home preparation for the first week of perinatal theory class: Follicular: from initiation of menstruation to estrogen peak. Rate of estrogen production increases about 1 week before ovulation. Oocytes complete the first meiotic division 36-48 hrs before ovulation. Ovarian wall ruptures, the secondary oocyte is extruded. Luteal: 14 days from ovulation to onset of menses. Lh causes the remaining tissues to form corpus luteum which secrets progesterone and some estrogen. If conception does not occur corpus luteum regresses, progesterone levels fall. Estrogen makes endometrium thicken from 1mm to 3-5mm. Endometrium continues to thicken, blood vessels dilate, endometrium prepares for implantation. If implantation does not happen, endometrium will start to degenerate and menses will start. Zygote: remains in the ampula for 24 hrs after fertilization, reaches uterine cavity 3-4 days after fertilization, which is ~5 days after follicular rupture. As zygote is indergoing division while moving down the tube it becodes morula, which consists of 8-16 cells called blastomeres.
