Document Summary

Skeletal muscles, attached to the bones enabling muscles to control body movement. Only contract in response to signals; cannot initiate own contraction. Cardiac muscles, found in the heart and moves blood through circulatory system. Smooth and cardiac are involuntary; and multiple levels of control. Smooth muscles is primary muscle of internal organs and tubes. Primary function is to influence movement of material into and out of the/within body. Often attached to bones by tendons made of collagen. Origin of a muscle is the end of the muscle that is attached closest to the bone. Muscle is called flexor if centers of connected bones are brought closer together when contracts/flexion. Muscle is called extensor if bones move away from each other when contracts/extension. Flexor extensor pairs are called antagonistic muscle groups. Biceps act as flexor while triceps act as extensor. When one muscle contracts and shortens, the antagonistic muscle relaxes and lengthens.
