BIOL 142 Chapter Notes - Chapter 17-18: Sympathetic Trunk, Cardiac Plexus, Postganglionic Nerve Fibers
Document Summary
The tonsils form a ring of lymphoid tissue around the entrance to the pharynx (throat), where they appear as swellings of the mucosa. Tonsils: palatine tonsils, lingual tonsils, pharyngeal tonsils. Located on either side at the posterior end of the oral cavity. These are the largest tonsils and the ones most often infected. Collective term for a lumpy collection off lymphoid follicles at the base of the tongue. Lingual tonsil (referred to as the adenoids if enlarged) located in the posterior walk of the nasopharynx. Surrounds the openings of the auditory tubes into the pharynx. The lub-dup heart sounds are associated with the closing of the heart valves. The first sound in the av valves closing, beginning of systole. The second sound is the sl valves closing, beginning of ventricular diastole. The sa node sets the pace for the heart as a whole because no other region of the conduction system or the myocardium has a faster depolarization rate.
