At a visionary company, it"s not about having one great leader, but rather producing a century of welch-caliber ceos all grown from the inside. Visionary companies begin breeding future management years before old management steps down. Visionary companies develop, promote, and select managerial talent from inside the company more than comparison companies this creates a continuity of leadership. This creates a management continuity loop at visionary companies. Example: p&g vs. colgate: colgate was originally an extraordinary company with strong core values, however, once the colgate brothers got old, they didn"t plan for new management, colgate merged with palmolive-peet, which created management turmoil. Pearce only focused on expansion and abandoned colgate"s core ideology: as colgate continued having rocky management, they slipped further behind.
