SOP 3004 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Social Neuroscience, Social Representation, Demand Characteristics
Document Summary
Fundamental principles (or big ideas) of social psychology. We construct our social reality (we react differently because we think differently: humans will try to explain behavior by attributing it to some kind of cause, & therefore try to make it seem orderly, predictable, & controllable. Social influences shape our behavior (social behavior is a function of both the person. & environment): we are sensitive & responsive to our social context, social neuroscience aims understand social behavior by considering both biological & social influences. Personal attitudes & dispositions also shape behavior (internal forces; introvert vs extrovert). Social behavior is biologically rooted (nature, not nurture) Social psychology principles are applicable in everyday life (how to know ourselves better, better health, better judicial procedures, influencing behaviors). Social psychologists propose theories that organize their observations & imply testable hypothesis & practical predictions in retrospect. It is dangerous because its findings can be used to manipulate people.
