Document Summary

Metabolic water = water synthesized as a by-product of cellular respiration. Anatomy = study of an organism"s physical structure. Physiology = study of how those structures function. Adaptations = heritable traits that allow individuals to survive and reproduce in certain environments compared to individuals that lack those traits. Fitness trade-offs: no adaptations are perfect. They are limited by which alleles are present in a population, and the nature of the traits that already exist. All adaptations derive from pre-existing traits: trade-offs = inescapable compromises between traits. Ex. crickets and spermatophores (which is a gelatinous packet of sperm). The longer it takes females to eat the gelatinous part of the packet, the more sperm enters her body. Adaptation and acclimatization: acclimatization = reversible responses to environmental uctuations. Changes within an individual, not something that can be passed on: the ability to acclimatize is an adaptation, however. Ex. people who can tan vs people who just burn.
