Document Summary

Qpcr to quantify the presence of two genes. Biological structure = altered by the species present, # of each species, age, size, and distribution. Succession = change of species assemblages over time: primary succession = colonization of new rock substrate (made by glacier or volcanic activity) by pioneer species (like bacteria, algae, lichens, fungi) Results in the creation of soil over time: secondary succession = occurs once the established species of an area are removed or reduced to allow a change of species composition. The remaining species in the area as well as surrounding areas will be in uences to the change. Ecologists study structure of communities to understand the process of how all the species occupying an area at the current moment came to be, and predict the changes in the future. This lab = investigating a forest that had been cleared to be a eld, but then abandoned: secondary succession.
