Document Summary

Chapter 4: nomenclature and conformations of alkanes and. There is a system for naming carbon molecules. Alkanes and cycloalkanes are very similar in their properties: alkanes = when all carbon carbon bonds are single bonds, cycloalkanes = when all or some of the carbon atoms are arranged in a ring. Sources of alkanes: primary source = petroleum made up of a mix of different organic compounds. Straight-chain alkanes ex. butane, pentane: even though in real life they are actually zigzagged, straight-chains are unbranched = when the carbon is bonded to no more than two carbons and only primary/secondary carbonds. Branched alkanes ex. isobutane, isopentane, neopentane, etc. Constitutional isomers have the same molecular formula: but, they have different structures and therefore have different properties. Ex. different melting/boiling points, densities, indexes of refraction, etc. Chapter 4. 3: iupac nomenclature of alkanes, alkyl halides, and alcohols. Iupac principle = each different compound should have a different and unambiguous name.
