INTA 2040 Chapter 4:
Document Summary
The origin of ships and shipping is lost. Transport by water has always been cheap compared to transport by land. Ships in general and warships in particular, have always been bigger than their land-bound equivalents, representing the largest and the most complicated movable machines. The largest technological undertakings created by men have always been represented by works of civil engineering, such as pyramids, canals, aqueducts, or fortifications. Ancient egyptians used papyrus for building boast, leather covered irish boats, and the principal material has been wood. It was hard to find the trees of the size and quality to build the largest and the most powerful naval craft, which determined which societies could or could not develop into active seafarers and naval power. Sails that are cheap and oars attached to each side of the stern that were used for steering are the two principal systems of propulsion that have always been used for waterborne craft.
